Top Books To Read When Starting An Online Business

business Apr 12, 2022

If you’re a millennial dad wanting to start a business or if you’re already in the process of building a business while juggling a full time job, kids and a wife, then you’re gonna wanna stick around.

Due to the internet it’s never been easier to start a business, but at the same time, there isn’t insane amount of information out there. And it’s extremely hard to decide who to listen to and what advice will get you the result you want faster.

I struggled with this at first as well, diving from video to video on YouTube looking for who had the answers. And as I watched all of these online business gurus give me their best tips on the subject I noticed one underlying factor. Every single one of them got their answers from books.

They described books as a wealth of untapped knowledge. People that devote time into writing a good valuable business book have about 10+ years experience on the topic and can give you shortcuts and fill you in on what works so that you don’t repeat their mistakes.

10+ years worth of experience condensed into a 200 page book that you can consume in a fraction of the time. Before I heard this, I had never thought of it that way. So as I watched these guys videos, I listened for book recommendations, purchased them, read them, and started implementing.

What I’m about to share with you are the top 7 most profitable business books you should read while building your business. If you can put even a tenth of what these books have to offer into action, you will make money.

What’s going on fellas, welcome to Alpha Dad Consulting, I am your host G. Vidal. And on this show we provide you as a millennial dad with the tools and resources you need to create the family and business life you want.

In this week’s post, we are going over a list of my top 7 most profitable business books. The principles, strategies and tactics I’ve learned from these books have made me a 6 figure provider and have allowed me to start my own business. My wife has been able to be a stay at home mom now for almost 4 years.

I was able to move us out of state and into a beautiful 2 story, 6 bedroom home. None of this would’ve been possible had I not implemented the stuff I learned from these books.

So let’s get into the books.

1. Think And Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

This book is probably one that you’ve heard of before as it is an old one. You’ll hear a lot of entrepreneurs credit this book a lot because of the ideas it presents surrounding wealth.

You see, for a long time I used to think that money in essence was a bad thing. That becoming rich would make me one of the “bad guys” in society. I had a very poor mentality and just accepted my fate without question.

My wife has always been a dreamer, so in our early years of marriage she would say things like “when we have a house, or when we get to go on a trip, I wanna do this and that.” And I would shatter her dream by saying, “yeah that would be nice, but all that requires money and that’s something we don’t have.”

You see, while she’s over there dreaming, I’m over here freaking out about how much money that’s gonna cost me. It took me a while to get exposed to this book and when I did, my relationship with money kinda shifted. My beliefs about becoming rich and wealthy changed.

I no longer saw it as a bad thing or as impossible. Think And Grow Rich is filled with stories of people attaining wealth through consistency and a never quit attitude. It’s an unfortunate truth, but true nonetheless that money, despite how you may feel about it, is a necessary resource.

And when you accumulate an abundance of it, for you as a family man, it provides you with more options than you would have without it. The ability to help out family and friends that are going through a hard time. The ability to live wherever you want to make sure that your family is safe and in a good environment.

You can’t beat that, and it all comes with building wealth. Think and Grow Rich gives you a good foundation on the topic, along with inspirational stories, belief shifts and strategies. Hope you check it out for yourself if you haven’t already.

2. Expert Secrets by Russell Brunson

This book is all about how to position yourself as an Expert on a given topic. If you’re in the process of starting an Online Business like I have than chances are you’re either struggling or have struggled with something called “Imposter Syndrome.” Which pretty much means that you think to yourself, “Who am I to give advice on this topic or who am I to start a business on this thing and ask people for money?”

You feel like you’re an imposter, or like all the kids back in middle school used to say when you were trying to become a skater and you didn’t even know how to get on the skateboard, “you’re a poser.” Nobody wants to be seen as a poser, but everyone wants the status of the expert.

This book essentially breaks down how to get past imposter syndrome and step into the role of an expert in whatever niche you’ve chosen. If you don’t have a niche yet, it walks you through strategies on how to find a niche within the 3 Big Markets of Wealth, Health, and Relationships.

One of the biggest takeaways I got from Expert Secrets, was the strategy behind crafting a story. The author, Russell Brunson, breaks this down pretty well and makes it a point to show you how you can leverage stories to sell and showcase your expertise to others so that they’ll wanna work with you. This is probably one of my favorite books of all time as when I first read it I couldn’t put it down.

3. Copywriting Secrets by Jim Edwards

Some of you may or may not be familiar with this term, copywriting. Most of the time people confuse it with copyright, meaning you copyright like a song or a book so that no one can steal your intellectual property. That’s not what this is.

Copywriting is actually what you see when you read a headline or you read an advertisement on a product. If you’ve ever visited a sales page for a product, every word on that page is considered sales copy. Which is just a fancy way to say words that were written for the purpose of convincing you take action. Some of the best Copywriters in the world are like artists when it comes to painting a picture in your head with words in order to convince you to take an action on something.

This book breaks this skill down for you and gives you some great formulas to follow in order to get you started. It breaks down the strategy behind copywriting and forming good attention grabbing headlines. Ultimately, when you’re starting a business, the goal is to sell a product or service to your prospect. But in order to get them to buy, you gotta get their attention first and hold their attention long enough to convince them to buy, copywriting helps you do that.

4. Socratic Selling Kevin Dailey

Are you afraid of sales? If the answer is yes, don’t be alarmed because the truth is most people are. When it comes to money, most people get funny. And when you bring up the word sales, people tend to picture those slimy car salesman that are lying to get as much out of you as possible.

Well what if I told you that you are constantly selling all the time every single day, you just don’t realize it? The only difference is that you’re not asking for money, but you’re definitely selling. I’m a fan of food, and when I lived in California there was a restaurant there called the Salt Creek Grille. Now I’m a sucker for some great BBQ ribs, and this place had the best BBQ ribs I’ve had to date at a restaurant at least.

I’m talking meat falling off the bone type ribs, tender, cooked to perfection with grade A BBQ sauce unlike you’ve ever had before. If you live near El Segundo, CA, do yourself a favor and hit this place up, you won’t regret it.

You see what I just did there is a form of selling. I’m selling you on the idea that you need to try these ribs. Now what the book Socratic Selling does for you, is teach you how to sell by becoming good at asking questions. Convincing your prospect that they should buy your product or service without becoming the sleazy sales guy.

Why this Socratic Selling method works so well is that you’re having people come to the conclusion themselves. This what the philosopher Socrates used to do with people when convincing of ideas. He would ask a serious of questions to lead people to a conclusion. I go back and reference this book a lot, because it not only helps you with sales, but it helps you with influencing people in general.

5. 100 Million Dollar Offers by Alex Hormozi

First off, if you haven’t heard of Alex Hormozi or watched any of his content. You need to look him up, this dude is a freakin genius in my opinion. I would not be surprised if he becomes a billionaire in the next 5 years or less. He wrote this book to teach entrepreneurs one of the most valuable skills in a business. How to craft your offer?

Without a great offer, you can have the best product or service in the world, but if it doesn’t appeal to a market, they will never buy. There’s some businesses out there, that have a shitty product, but they have a great offer so people still buy it. Politicians are probably the best example. “We’re gonna build back better.” But then you get this horribly shitty outdated product that you unfortunately have to wait four years to possibly return.

However, this book is not meant for people like that. It’s meant for people like you that wanna create a valuable product or service and pair that with an irresistible offer that others will have a hard time saying no to. Alex breaks down the offer into components from your target audience to the type of guarantee you should offer your clients.

I mean this is the most thorough breakdown of an offer I’ve ever seen. And the best part is, this book is only $1. Yes, you heard that right, he sells this for a freakin dollar. There’s people that would pay thousands and thousands of dollars to get the info in this book. If you consider yourself an entrepreneur, don’t miss out on this one.

6. Getting Everything You Can Out Of All You’ve Got by Jay Abraham

So you got yourself some clients. You convinced them that you’re an Expert within your niche. They engaged with your convincing sales copy that caused them to take action. You led the sale through Socratic selling and hit them with your irresistible offer and they said Yes. So what happens now?

That’s where Jay Abraham comes in with this book and teaches you all the different strategies for maximizing profit from the clients you have. What else can you offer them? Maybe they bought your entry level stuff, but there’s more that you can offer at higher tier pricing. Not every one is gonna buy that, but there’s always a small percentage that will.

How about those that said no to your entry level products the first time you offered them? Maybe they weren’t ready to buy at that time, so Jay gives you tactics on how to win back that business. What about how to get referrals from your existing clients? Don’t even trip, he’s got you covered.

Now this is an old book, so some strategies have changed a bit, but the principles are still applicable even today. One of the concepts that I really like that Jay Abraham states is that he doesn’t refer to his buyers as customers, he always refers to them as clients. There’s a certain prestige that comes with serving clients rather than customers that causes you as a business owner to serve them at a higher caliber.

That’s something that I’ve personally adopted, I always refer to those I serve as clients, never customers.

7. How To Get Paid For What You Know by Graham Cochrane

This is actually a new book that I am reading right now from one of my favorite entrepreneurs. Graham Cochrane has been in the online business game for over a decade. He started off in the music niche where he sold courses on how to produce high quality music in a home studio setup. When I was producing and rapping myself, I engaged with a lot of his content. But a few years ago he made the switch to Online Business and I’ve purchased multiple products from him that have helped me greatly.

Unlike the other books I’ve mentioned on this list, he doesn’t show you one specific skill, but instead he gives you the whole package of starting your online business. He focuses on a digital course type business, kind of in the e-learning space which I’m a big proponent of.

Not only that, but Graham’s approach to business is grounded in Content Marketing rather than marketing through Facebook ads or YouTube ads. He doesn’t spend a dime on ads and still became a millionaire.

I definitely wanted to put this book on the list even though I haven’t finished it at the time of this recording. Because I’ve engaged with a lot of his content and I’ve taken his flagship course, I can assure you that you will get value from this book and it will make an impact on you.
